Public input meetings to be held on planning ordinance

In April, the Spartanburg County Planning Department will hold a pair of public input meetings that are an important next step in the Area Performance Planning process.

County staff wants to hear from residents in the southwestern portion of Spartanburg County and discuss how this proposed ordinance could affect their individual properties. To this end, the planning department is mailing information about these two meetings to property owners in that area, encouraging them to attend one of these drop-in information sessions. Those sessions are scheduled for 3-7 p.m. April 17 and 3-7 p.m. April 19 at the Spartanburg Community College Tyger River Campus. Those mailers should arrive in early April.

Residents can also view a draft of the proposed ordinance and learn more about the process so far by visiting SpartanburgCountyAPP.org.

After these public input meetings, the draft ordinance will then proceed through the Spartanburg County Planning Commission for revisions, and if that body agrees to send it to County Council, ultimately County Council will hear the issue.

Through the Area Performance Planning process so far, groups of stakeholders and citizen advisory groups have held numerous meetings, several of which have lasted five hours or more to draft, vet and revise this proposed ordinance.

The proposed ordinance provides the flexibility to accommodate market principles while balancing private property rights. Think of this as a “good neighbor” ordinance, which doesn’t seek to limit what a property owner can do with his or her property, but rather attempts to make neighboring uses more compatible with one another.

It would be nice to have a map with the roads types labeled.
